Strengthening the right to academic freedom across regions

International workshop brings together coalitions from the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia to advance regional principles and global strategies for academic freedom.

From April 8–10, the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA) took part in the Workshop on Developing Regional Principles to Promote Academic Freedom, alongside partners from Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as Scholars at Risk (SAR).

Over three days, the workshop brought together diverse voices to exchange experiences and contribute to the development of regional principles on academic freedom in Asia and Africa, while also building strategies to strengthen the Inter-American Principles on Academic Freedom and University Autonomy.

CAFA contributed key reflections to the discussions, sharing the pathways that led to the advancement of Inter-American principles on academic freedom, as well as the ongoing challenges in ensuring this fundamental human right across the Americas.

“It has been a powerful moment of dialogue, analysis, and collective thinking—reinforcing the urgency of coordinated action and global solidarity. Together, we are laying the groundwork for academic freedom to become a lived reality worldwide. This is just the beginning—many actions are yet to come,” said Camilla Croso, CAFA’s General Director.
