On November 12 2024, the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA) and allied institutions presented a continental overview of serious setbacks to academic freedom at the 191st Session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Three main issues were highlighted: attacks on university autonomy in financial, administrative, pedagogical and physical aspects; the silencing, persecution and criminalization of members of the educational community; and the serious problem of sexual and gender violence in the universities of the region. The urgent need to respect the Inter-American Principles of Academic Freedom and University Autonomy approved by the IACHR to guarantee an emancipatory and quality education was reiterated.
