CAFA has established a Consortium for Monitoring Academic Freedom in the Americas, comprising partner institutions with experience in monitoring initiatives. Through this collective effort, we aim to increase our ability to evaluate issues related to academic freedom and university autonomy, taking into account both violations and progress in this area.

SAR’s Academic Freedom Monitoring Project investigates and reports attacks on higher education with the aim of raising awareness, generating advocacy, and increasing protection for scholars, students, and academic communities. Learn more.

Our mission is to safeguard academic freedom, uphold human rights standards, and strengthen democratic principles across the Americas.

The Center for the Analysis of Liberty and Authoritarianism (LAUT) is an independent and non-partisan institution for interdisciplinary research committed to producing and disseminating knowledge about the quality of the rule of law and democracy. LAUT aims to monitor the various manifestations of authoritarianism in order to support the mobilisation of civil society and the protection of civil liberties.

The Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) was created in 1981, being one of the oldest such Centres in Canada and the world. It promotes human rights through a dynamic and rigorous action-research approach and places a particular emphasis on issues of public policy and social justice. HRREC defines its mission statement as: We ‘REACH’ — Research, Educate, Advocate & Convene for Human Rights.

We are a coalition of individuals and organisations dedicated to research, social advocacy and transformative education. We adopt a regional, critical and multidisciplinary approach. Our aim is to promote social justice and strengthen democratic, supportive, inclusive and fair societies in order to address the contemporary challenges facing Central America.
The International Justice and Human Rights Clinic (IJHRC) is a legal clinic for upper-level law students at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. The clinic works on pressing human rights and global justice concerns through hands-on work on international cases and projects. It partners with a range of international organizations, including criminal courts and tribunals, United Nations human rights bodies, and NGOs.
Aula Abierta is an NGO that holds consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Founded in Venezuela, its work extends throughout Latin America. The organisation’s mission is to promote and protect academic freedom, university autonomy and the rights of the university community in Latin America, through documentation, academic work and international advocacy actions within the framework of international human rights protection systems.
