Academic Freedom in the Americas – Trends, Challenges, and Critical Horizons

This volume, promoted by the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA) and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) as part of the first edition of the research call for teams, Strengthening Comparative Research and Critical Thinking in the Framework of Academic Freedom in the Americas, is an urgent response to the deterioration of university autonomy across the hemisphere.

Drawing on research conducted in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Guatemala, the book examines academic freedom not only as a pillar of democracy but also as a fundamental and interdependent human right. In the face of rising authoritarianism, the judicialization of teaching, and growing threats in digital environments, the chapters explore the tensions between institutional autonomy and political or market pressures.

Adopting an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach, this volume offers an essential resource for understanding the structural inequalities that shape knowledge production. Above all, it is a collective call to protect the right to research, teach, and disseminate ideas free from censorship.
