Public Statement: CAFA Expresses Deep Concern Over Tragic Femicide at CEFET-RJ

Document highlights the impact of gender-based violence on dignity, safety, and academic freedom

The Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA) has released a statement condemning the femicide that occurred on 28 November 2025 at the CEFET-RJ Maracanã campus in Brazil, which claimed the lives of Allane Pedrotti and Layse Costa Pinheiro.

CAFA emphasized that gender-based violence in educational institutions threatens not only life and dignity but also the exercise of academic freedom. The organization reiterated that such violence is a structural problem across the Americas and called on authorities and educational institutions to strengthen prevention and response measures.

CAFA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe environments for teaching, research, and learning.
